Instructor
Syed Khalid, Chief Performance and Systems Integration Engineer on the JSF LiftFan at Rolls-Royce North America
This interactive course includes tutorial sessions in which the attendees can work out instructor-facilitated examples of gas turbine aerothermodynamics and performance modeling. The material has been evaluated by the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at North Carolina State University. The course content will be useful to individuals involved with all types of gas turbine engines. The aircraft engine is used in the cycle analysis examples since several sophisticated techniques are utilized in such examples. However, the engineer can easily relate those examples to cycle analysis of other gas turbine engines. The presented aerothermodynamics and turbo-machinery theory is applicable to all types of gas turbine engines.
The highlights of the course are:
- comprehensible presentation of the basic theory – freshman mathematics used
- theory illustrated with worked out examples. Excel spreadsheets used
- relevant thermodynamics and compressible fluid flow
- physics of thrust generation and the function of turbo-machinery
- generalized gas turbine performance parameters
- energy transfer in a turbo-machine
- basics of fan/compressor aerodynamic design
- basics of turbine aerodynamic design
- combustor performance characteristics
- design point cycle analysis
- integration of component performance to obtain mixed flow turbofan performance
- design point calculations
- off-design cycle balancing
