Plenary Sessions

Challenges in Engineering Education

Today's global challenges will require engineers who understand more than the technical content of their profession. They must also be comfortable working in the global community, communicating in all forms of media, and skilled at being a part of an innovative team, or leading an innovative team. This presentation will address some of the critical issues in educating and developing engineers who will be ready to tackle all of these challenges.

Speaker:
Dr. Delores Etter, Texas Instruments Distinguished Chair in Engineering Education Director, Caruth Institute for Engineering Education, Electrical Engineering Department, at Southern Methodist University (SMU)

Leading Companies in Really Tough Times

The development of sophisticated hybrid, battery-power, and alternative fuel technologies promises, and, in fact, is already starting, to revolutionize the automotive and trucking industry. These technologies meet the demands for less fuel consumption, lower emissions, and less reliance on imported and increasingly scarce fossil fuels. Companies who commit substantial R & D resources to the development of these new products will need to be assured of a protected head-start in the market in order to achieve a return on their development investments. However, auto companies today are struggling to make basic investments, and keep their doors open in the face of imploding market demand, and unreasonable banks. Performance alone is not sufficient to ensure viability in today's environment.

Mr. Weber will discuss the challenges that face companies and investors as they plan green products to meet the needs of their increasingly demanding global car maker customers, how he has positioned Remy International to meet these rapidly emerging needs, and the strategies he's implemented to protect their intellectual property in the challenging automotive industry. After his talk, Mr. Weber will be available to answer questions about the business and technical challenges that companies face in meeting the world's new environmental and fuel efficiency demands.

Speaker:
Mr. John Weber, President & CEO, Remy International
